✅ GCSE Maths Parent Support Checklist
Use this checklist to make sure your child has the right habits, structure and support in place for success in GCSE Maths.
📅 Weekly Routine
⬜ My child has at least 3–5 scheduled maths study sessions per week
⬜ Sessions are short and focused (20–40 minutes, not exhausting marathons)
⬜ Maths practice is spread across the week — not crammed into one session
⬜ Maths revision is part of the normal weekly routine, not a last-minute panic
✍️ Active Study (Not Just Watching Videos)
⬜ My child writes full working, not just final answers
⬜ They attempt questions before checking solutions
⬜ They correct mistakes properly, not just move on
⬜ They practise non-calculator and calculator questions regularly
⬜ They are doing timed questions, not just untimed worksheets
📚 Resources in Use
⬜ They use school homework and worksheets consistently
⬜ They practise on at least one exam-question platform, such as:
⬜ They are not jumping randomly between too many sites
⬜ Their revision is matched to their target grade (4+, 7+, or 9)
🧠 Understanding & Confidence
⬜ My child can usually explain what they revised this week
⬜ They ask for help when something doesn’t make sense
⬜ They are not avoiding key topics (fractions, algebra, percentages, graphs)
⬜ Their confidence is generally stable, not collapsing after one bad test
📝 Exam Preparation
⬜ They are completing full GCSE-style exam questions
⬜ They practise both Foundation or Higher tier questions as appropriate
⬜ They are developing speed as well as accuracy
⬜ They review exam mistakes carefully, not just their score
⚠️ Early Warning Signs to Watch For
⬜ Avoiding maths completely
⬜ Panic before tests
⬜ Falling behind on homework
⬜ Big gaps in basic skills
⬜ Late-night cramming
⬜ Saying “I just don’t get maths”
If two or more of these appear regularly, early support is strongly recommended.
🤝 Support Outside School
⬜ My child has someone they can ask for help quickly
⬜ They receive regular feedback on their progress
⬜ They are not trying to fix everything alone
⬜ Extra support is in place before panic sets in
💤 Lifestyle & Wellbeing
⬜ They get enough sleep during the week
⬜ They take regular breaks from screens
⬜ They have downtime that isn’t guilty revision
⬜ Stress is being managed, not ignored
✅ If Most Boxes Are Ticked…
Your child is in a strong position for GCSE Maths success.
⚠️ If Many Are Unticked…
Early action now can prevent:
Loss of confidence
Falling behind
Year-11 panic
Grade underperformance
Final Word on Extra Support
If you feel your child would benefit from extra structure, confidence or expert guidance, high-quality GCSE Maths tuition can make a decisive difference — especially when introduced early rather than as a last-minute rescue. Even a short period of targeted support can stabilise understanding, rebuild confidence and remove the stress that builds when students feel stuck.
If you would like to explore whether one-to-one GCSE Maths tuition could help your child move forward with confidence, you are very welcome to get in touch to discuss their needs and next steps.
