About Me
I’m James Beaumont, a fully qualified secondary school teacher and specialist online A Level Maths tutor and GCSE Maths tutor with over ten years of professional teaching experience. I work with students across the UK and internationally, helping them secure strong passes, achieve top grades, and develop the confidence and independence needed for long-term academic success. Learn more about how online maths tuition works on my How It Works page.
Before entering teaching, I worked as a professional mathematician, and this background gives me a depth of subject understanding that goes far beyond exam technique alone. I don’t simply teach students how to apply methods — I teach them how to think mathematically, solve unfamiliar problems with confidence, and fully understand the structure behind the mathematics they are learning.
My Academic And Teaching Qualifications
My teaching is built on high-level academic training as well as formal teacher qualification. I hold a Master of Mathematics (European MMATH), completed in 1999 through a joint programme at University of Leeds and University of Heidelberg. This is a full Master’s-level degree in mathematics, giving me a far deeper understanding of the subject than is required to simply teach the syllabus.
Holding a Master’s in Mathematics means I:
Understand where the A Level content comes from, not just how to teach it
Can explain ideas from first principles, not memorised methods
Recognise hidden connections between topics that most students never see
Anticipate misconceptions before they become ingrained
Train students to think with mathematical precision and confidence
This depth is especially powerful for:
Top-grade A/A* students
Further Maths candidates
Students aiming for highly competitive university courses
Those who struggle because they don’t truly “get” why methods work
In short, students are not being taught by someone who simply teaches the course — they are being taught by someone who has mastered the subject at a far higher academic level and knows how to translate that understanding into clear, accessible teaching.
Following this, I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Thames Valley University in 2008. This gave me full professional teacher qualification and formal training in:
How students learn mathematics
Assessment and progress tracking
Exam preparation strategy
Differentiation for all abilities
The combination of a Master’s degree in Mathematics and formal teacher training is what allows me to operate not just as an online GCSE Maths Tutor or A Level Maths Tutor, but as a true mathematical specialist with professional classroom and examination expertise.
Professional Teaching Experience
Across my career as both a classroom teacher and an online GCSE and A Level Maths tutor, I have taught successfully in:
State secondary schools
Independent schools
Sixth-form colleges
One-to-one and online tuition settings
Alongside supporting a wide range of high-performing state-school students, I have also taught pupils from some of the UK’s most academically selective independent schools, including Eton College, Winchester College, Tonbridge School and Benenden School.
This breadth of experience means I am equally comfortable supporting:
Students aiming to secure a confident GCSE pass
Students pushing from a grade 6 to a 7 or from a B to an A
Students targeting A/A* at A Level
Further Maths students preparing for the highest level of performance
Every student receives the same level of academic rigour, structure and personal attention, regardless of their starting point.
My Academic Work As A Professional Mathematician
Before entering teaching, I spent four years working in the Computer Science Department at University of Bath, specialising in the development of efficient algorithms for computation with elementary functions. This work required a deep understanding of both pure mathematics and practical computational methods, translating advanced theory into fast, reliable implementations. I also presented this research at international computer algebra conferences, including events in Beijing and Philadelphia. This experience at the forefront of mathematical research is what underpins the depth, precision and clarity I now bring to my work as an A Level Maths Tutor and GCSE Maths Tutor.
My Approach To Maths Tuition
My approach as an online A Level Maths tutor and GCSE Maths tutor is structured, methodical and highly personalised. Every programme begins with a clear assessment of:
Strengths
Weaknesses
Learning habits
Exam technique
From there, tuition is carefully built around:
Deep conceptual understanding (not surface memorisation)
Confident problem-solving in unfamiliar contexts
Precise exam technique tailored to each exam board
Speed, accuracy and resilience under timed conditions
Lessons are calm, focused and demanding in the right way. Most students experience 1–2 grades of improvement within 6–12 months, alongside significant increases in confidence and mathematical maturity.
Why Parents Choose Me
Parents choose me as their GCSE Maths tutor and A Level Maths tutor because I offer:
The reassurance of me being a fully qualified teacher
Over a decade of proven classroom and online tuition success
A background as a professional mathematician
Clear communication and honest progress feedback
Structured, carefully planned lessons
Professional reliability and consistency
I am fully DBS checked and registered with the DBS Update Service, ensuring the highest safeguarding standards at all times. My tuition is not designed for shortcuts — it is built for long-term progress, confidence and sustained academic success.
Why Students Enjoy Learning With Me
Students often tell me that lessons feel:
Clear and well paced
Calm and supportive
Focused without pressure
Confident rather than stressful
My goal is to remove fear and replace it with understanding, structure, strategy and confidence. When students understand why maths works, not just how, their confidence and performance rise quickly.
Online Tuition With An In-Person Feel
My online A Level and GCSE Maths tuition does not compromise the standards you would expect from in-person tuition. I have invested heavily in cutting-edge remote tuition software so that my online GCSE and A Level Maths lessons are fully interactive, dynamic and academically rigorous. Students do not simply watch — they actively work throughout each session using:
Shared interactive whiteboards
Live written working and annotation
Instant feedback
Real-time problem solving
This allows me to demonstrate full worked solutions step by step, watch students solve questions live, and correct misconceptions immediately. We can share graphs, diagrams and exam-style questions instantly, creating a learning environment that closely mirrors — and often exceeds — traditional in-person tuition.
The result is an online learning experience that is highly engaging, tightly structured and exceptionally efficient. Many families are surprised to find that online tuition, when delivered properly, is often more focused, more interactive and more productive than face-to-face lessons.
My Commitment To Results - In And Out Of Lessons
As an online GCSE Maths tutor and A Level Maths tutor, I measure success not only by exam grades, but also by the long-term qualities that underpin genuine mathematical success:
Confidence – students learn to approach difficult questions without fear
Independence – they become self-sufficient problem-solvers
Resilience – they learn how to recover from mistakes and persist with challenging material
Long-term mathematical ability – not just short-term exam performance
That said, results do matter. My students consistently go on to achieve:
Strong GCSE passes
A and A* grades at A Level
Success in Further Maths
Entry to competitive university courses
Crucially, support does not end when the lesson finishes. Where possible, I make myself available between sessions via WhatsApp messaging to help with quick questions, clarify misunderstandings, and offer guidance with urgent problems. This ensures students never feel stuck for long and can maintain momentum between lessons rather than losing confidence or falling behind.
This combination of high-level teaching during lessons and practical academic support between sessions is one of the key reasons students make such consistent, sustained progress over time.
