What Is The TMUA?
The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is an admissions test used by a number of leading universities — including Cambridge, Imperial College London, LSE, Warwick and Durham — for Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics and other mathematically demanding degrees. Rather than testing new content, it examines how well you can apply familiar mathematics to unfamiliar problems: the material is drawn mainly from the first year of A Level Maths, with a small number of second-year topics, but the questions require sharper reasoning than anything you will meet at school.
A strong TMUA score makes an application stand out, and at several universities it can lead to a reduced offer — which is why TMUA preparation has become such a valuable investment for ambitious applicants.

Two 75-minute papers sat consecutively in a single sitting, with no calculator allowed.
40 Multiple-Choice Questions
20 questions per paper — just under four minutes each, so speed and accuracy both matter.
Scored 1.0 To 9.0
Marks from both papers convert to a single scaled score. There is no negative marking, so every question is worth attempting.
Computer-Based Test
Sat at Pearson VUE test centres, with advance registration required. The question style is unchanged, so past papers remain the best preparation.
Paper 1 tests applications of mathematical knowledge — using familiar techniques in unfamiliar settings. Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning, including ideas from elementary logic and proof that most students have never been taught at school. It is Paper 2 where expert guidance typically adds the most value.

How My TMUA Tuition Works
Every programme is personalised, but a well-structured TMUA preparation typically follows a clear progression. Most students begin in the late spring or summer between Year 12 and Year 13, once the core first-year A Level content is in place, ready for the test in the autumn. We start by securing the foundations — particularly the logic and proof ideas that underpin Paper 2 — then develop problem-solving fluency using carefully chosen multiple-choice questions, including MAT material that mirrors the TMUA style. In the final phase we move to full TMUA past papers under timed conditions, refining exam strategy, timing and accuracy so nothing about the real test comes as a surprise.
Between lessons I set focused practice and remain available for support, and parents receive regular, honest feedback on progress.
